FM 209 - Pipeline Heat Transfer in PIPE-FLO (4 Hours)

FM-209 provides users with the fundamental physics behind the pipeline heat transfer functionality employed by PIPE-FLO. The mechanisms of heat transfer are discussed as well as the thermal properties of fluids, pipelines and pipe insulation. Exercises are included which give students hands-on experience using the PIPE-FLO program to digitally model piping systems which can be significantly affected by thermal conditions.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the different modes of heat transfer that can occur in pipelines in hydraulic systems
  • Learn different methods of overcoming heat transfer issues including pipe insulation, pipe heat wrap, and underground burial.
  • Learn how to create seasonal Heat Transfer settings in PIPE-FLO to capture ambient conditions, fluid thermal properties and pipe insulation properties.
  • Gain hands-on experience using PIPE-FLO’s pipeline thermal calculations to evaluate heat addition and losses in a piping system in class exercises
    • Evaluate heat transfer occurring in pipelines between a natural source of water (river) and a coal-fired power plant
    • Evaluate heat transfer that occurs in a manufacturing process which must maintain product temperature to ensure a viable product.
    • Evaluate heat transfer occurring in hot water lines which are routed between buildings in a university campus.
  • Recommended Prerequisites: FM-101
