FM307 will give students hands-on experience analyzing common shipboard piping system applications using PIPE-FLO in a Virtual Instructor Lead Training (VILT) environment. Students will evaluate complex applications to understand the changing hydraulic requirements and demands of a ship’s ballast system, bilge water system, and fire main system. Solutions for detrimental operational issues such as cavitation and choked flow in the systems are evaluated. Recommended prerequisite – FM301.

Course Objectives:

• Gain hands-on experience evaluating common shipboard piping systems using PIPE-FLO digital twins and virtual instrumentation
• Analyze various operating scenarios that require re-alignment of the piping system and understand the changing system requirements
• Utilize the Over Time feature in PIPE-FLO to perform a time-based analysis on the ship’s ballast system to determine the time required for charging and de-ballasting operations
• Learn the analysis results available to use as “virtual instrumentation” to identify plant operational problems such as cavitation and choked flow
• Evaluate low fire main pressure during firefighting operations and determine the plant lineup required to ensure flow requirements are met
• Student exercises: ship ballast system, bilge water system, and fire main system
